Resistance welding in the automotive industry is probably the most common. During vehicle assembly there are three resistance welding processes that are typically leveraged: spot welding, projection welding (a variation of spot welding) and seam welding (a variation of spot welding).
Projection Welding in the automotive industry is commonly utilized for the fastening of screw machine parts to metal, including studs and nuts as well as brackets and parts of dissimilar gauge thickness. It is also used to join wires and bars that must be crossed.
Resistance spot welding is particularly advantageous in the automotive industry due to its ability to provide rapid, high volume manufacturing, operational ease, safety, low environmental impact, cost efficiency, as well as stable, repeatable results.
Resistance seam welding is commonly utilized as part of the automotive system where parts require liquid-tight or water-tight construction such as exhaust systems or fuel tanks.
Flash or Butt welding is common for joining parts where the entire cross section is joined together such as axle assemblies, linkage assemblies, torque rods and most notably, wheel rim products.
Fusion Welding such as MIG/TIG welding machines or Laser welding cells are usually for attaching heavier thickness of component parts together or where full or a majority of the periphery of the joining parts need to be joined together.
